March is Save Your Vision Month

March is designated as National Save Your Vision Month.  It is a great time to think about your gift of sight and learn more about how to protect your precious sense of sight.

Here are some top tips to help you “Save Your Vision”

  • Schedule your annual eye examination

One of the most important things you can do to save your vision is to have annual eye health and vision examinations.  Preventing vision loss is much more successful than reversing vision loss. Many conditions that cause vision loss do not have symptoms until the late stages but we can diagnose and treat them in much earlier stages.

  • Protect your eyes from harmful UV and Blue light

Studies link exposure to certain wavelengths of light can cause premature cataracts, macular degeneration, eye fatigue and cancers of the lid and eye.  Make sure you wear sunglasses outdoors and if you spend considerable time looking at devices that emit blue light use filters to protect your eyes.

  • Eat a healthy diet

Our diet impacts our ocular health as much as the health of any other parts of our body.  Diets rich in antioxidants can help reverse oxidative damage.  Some of the top nutrients for our eyes include Omega 3 fatty acids found in fish and nuts as well as Lutein, Zeaxanthin and other carotenoids that are found in deep green fruits and vegetables.

  • Stop smoking

We all know that smoking is unhealthy. Quitting smoking is not that easy though. If you are a smoker take steps to stop smoking.

  • Prevent injuries

Eye injuries from sports and other high risk activities such as wood working and landscaping happen more often than you think.   Safety eyewear has become more fashionable and functional than ever!  Check our great collection and start protecting your eyes today.
