5th Annual Snowman Building Contest and S’mores for Sight–Cancelled

This is one of our favorite community events and we are sad that due to Mother Natures poor cooperation the City of Buchanan is cancelling this years event…..but the Snowcones for Sight is only 7 months away!!

We have so much fun sponsoring this event. This is our Fifth year and the event keeps growing and growing. We hope this year will be the best yet!!

Combined our annual Snowman building contest and “S’mores for Sight” station have earned over $1,000 in cash and gifts for entrants. More than 450 hours in volunteer hours and $3,000 in in-kind contributions. We hope to see that grow this year. The S’mores for Sight station provided a cracking fire for friends and family to warm up, visit and build their own s’more for a donation to the Buchanan’s Lion Club. The last event raised nearly $200.00 for the Buchanan-Galien Lions Club to help the visually needy in the community.

Now is the time to start planning your snowman entry for the event. Participants plan their own snowman and fill out an entry form. We encourage early registration but it is not mandatory. Space is limited so entrants are accepted on a first come, first serve basis.

February is AMD Awareness Month

With life expectancy figures continuing to climb, managing eye disease is essential for people to maintain healthy, happy and productive lives. According to the American Optometric Association (AOA), Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of severe vision loss in people over age 50. The Centers for Disease Control and prevention estimate that 1.8 million people have the disease and another 7.3 million are at risk for vision loss from AMD. But there is action you can take to help prevent your risk of vision loss.

The exact cause of macular degeneration is unknown but it may be related to aging, hereditary factors, smoking and exposure to high levels of ultraviolet radiation and blue light, both found in sunlight. Your lifestyle can play a role in reducing your risk of developing AMD and other eye diseases.

The AOA recommends that individuals:
eat a low-fat balanced diet rich in green, leafy vegetables, or ask their optometrist about dietary supplements;
wear sunglasses that block 99 to 100 percent of ultraviolet radiation;
keep blood pressure under control;
avoid or stop smoking.
